Málaga is the city that offers the perfect combination in terms of culture, terraces, tapas, sea and beach, both in summer and winter. Málaga has a rich history in which Phoenicians, Romans and Moors have played a role. There are several places of interest, the Roman theatre, the Alcazaba with many Arabic details and the Gibralfaro castle. The city has a large Cathedral with a special story and many other churches that are worth a visit. The old center has a lot of cozy streets and squares. Málaga has a very pleasant climate, the sun shines 300 days a year.

Alcazaba Málaga

During your stay at Villa Botánica, you should not miss a visit to the Alcazaba. The Alcazaba in Málaga is a Moorish fortress with Arab and Roman influences.

The base of the Alcazaba in Málaga dates back to the ninth century. In the eleventh century it was further expanded, as part of the fortress walls that were built around Málaga at the time. The fortress was defended from the higher Gibralfaro castle. This made the fortress a safe place for princes and governors.

The Arab influences from the time of the Moorish rule in Andalusia are clearly reflected in the Alcazaba. In short, many Arabic characters, figures and richly decorated arches.

Castle of Gibralfaro

The castle was built in the 14th century to protect the Alcazaba, with a barracks for the soldiers and a lighthouse. The Gibralfaro Castle is located on the Gibralfaro mountain of the same name. This mountain is clearly visible from the harbor. Hence the name: Gibralfaro means mountain of light. You can also clearly see the defensive walls running over the ridge to the top. The top is 130 meters high. The view from the castle over Málaga and the sea is beautiful. On clear days it is even possible to see the Strait of Gibraltar.

Roman Theater of Málaga

The theater in Málaga is not the largest theater in Spain, but it is one of the oldest Roman theaters in Spain. It dates from the first century BC (during the reign of Emperor Augustus) and was in use until the third century. The Roman theater was only discovered in the 1950s during the renovation of the library and municipal archives. It was hidden under the buildings. In the end it was decided to demolish the buildings that were built on the theater and the restoration of the theater has only been completed since 2011.

Málaga Cathedral

The cathedral is located in the square "Plaza del Obispo" and the tower of the cathedral stands out from all sides of the city. The full name of the cathedral is "La Santa Iglesia Cathedral Basilica de la Encarnación".

In 1528 they started to build the cathedral of Málaga for more than 200 years. The cathedral was built under the direction of Diego de Siloe on the foundation of an old mosque from the 8th century, but the construction process was frequently interrupted by a lack of money. The left tower of 84 meters is therefore complete, but the right tower is still only half completed.

The cathedral is popularly called "La manquita", which means the 'one-armed lady'. The long construction process has also ensured that the cathedral has a wide variety of architectural styles.
